In 2015, we turned families away 4,115 times for lack of room.

A lot has changed since Ronald McDonald House Akron was built in 1985. Akron Children’s Hospital has grown to a world-class pediatric destination, so our House now draws families from 40 Ohio counties, 23 states and six countries…far more than our 20 rooms can hold.

We’re building 40 new rooms to meet the need, but that will greatly increase our expenses for furnishings, food, laundry, utilities and more. We need your help!

More rooms. More families. More hope.

Our new 40-room House is on track for completion in fall of 2017. It will include bigger play areas, new kitchens, more space to relax, and several long-stay suites for families facing treatments like bone marrow transplants and long Neonatal Intensive Care stays.

Donate today, and help us say “yes” to families in need.

“If Ronald McDonald House wasn’t here, we would have slept in our car.”

Colleen and Charlie Miller
Alliance, OH

When Colleen and Charlie Miller learned their daughter Carmen had a brain tumor, they had no idea they would spend the next eight months at Akron Children’s Hospital. Thanks to our House, they were by her side the whole time.

“Carmen had to stay within 10 minutes of the hospital, but we live an hour away.”

The toddler was diagnosed with a softball-sized glioblastoma. Her months-long treatment required 12 surgeries and numerous rounds of chemotherapy. “At the beginning, we’d both have to sleep in her room or the waiting room,” said Charlie. “We couldn’t afford to stay at a hotel or rent a house.”

They were determined that their daughter would never be alone through treatment. After Carmen’s first surgery, they learned about the Ronald McDonald House of Akron.

“Because of you, we can spend time with our daughter when she needs us most.”

Discovering a home away from home.

“We’ve been back home four days in the past three months,” said Charlie, “but this House has really helped make it like home. We have so many firsts here. Her first time using the potty was here. Going up and down the steps…here. She learned half her vocabulary here. So this is a home to us.”

Today, Carmen’s cancer is in remission and she’s back home with her family in Alliance.

Giving families real peace of mind.

Thanks to our nightly meals, open pantry and laundry facilities, the Millers could concentrate on Carmen’s care rather than worrying about expenses. “We’re middle class,” said Colleen. “We work every day, we provide for our family. But you don’t expect your kid to have a brain tumor. We don’t know what we’d do without this place.”

Charlie said it best. “They helped take care of our daughter, so they’re family as far as I’m concerned.”
